Historical Background:

The earliest dated photograph (which is relative and not certain), by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826, is of a view through a window. The central role of light, framing, and perception are concepts that have remained central to the visual arts. Historically associated with ideas of boundary, openness, and reflection, the window motif continues to influence artists from Leon Battista Alberti to Gerhard Richter.

What is a Cyanotype?

Paper coated with specific chemicals is exposed to UV light, creating a cyanotype with characteristic blue tones. Exposure can be done using sunlight or artificial UV light.

Concept:

My own series of cyanotype windows explores these themes within the monastery of Bellelay in Switzerland, using the window as a mask for light to pass through the blurred boundaries between inside and out, challenging the visual perception of place.
